Convert AAC to MP3 — for compatibility outside the Apple/streaming ecosystem

AAC is everywhere modern audio lives — Apple Music, YouTube uploads, Spotify, podcasts, video files — but it isn't always playable everywhere you need it. AAC to MP3 is the conversion you make when a destination tool, older device, or specific platform demands MP3. Quality-wise it's a downgrade (AAC sounds better at the same bitrate), but for compatibility it's often necessary. Here's when it makes sense, when it doesn't, and how to do it without making the audio noticeably worse.

When converting AAC to MP3 is the right call

  • You need to play the file on an older device or car stereo that explicitly only supports MP3. AAC has nearly universal support today, but some pre-2010 hardware still requires MP3.
  • You're submitting audio to a service or platform that lists MP3 as the only accepted format (some smaller podcast hosts, niche upload tools).
  • You're sending audio to someone whose phone or app stack mishandles AAC. Rare but real — happens occasionally with stripped-down Android players.
  • You need the file to embed in a website or app where MP3 has the broadest browser support. Modern <audio> tags handle AAC fine, but MP3 has zero compatibility risk.
  • You're prepping for offline distribution on USB drives, MP3 CDs, or memory cards for older listeners or specific hardware.

When you should NOT convert AAC to MP3

  • You're listening to it yourself on modern gear. AAC plays everywhere now and sounds better than MP3 at the same bitrate. Converting just degrades the audio.
  • You think it'll improve quality. Wrong direction — MP3 is older and less efficient than AAC. At the same bitrate, MP3 always sounds equal-or-worse.
  • Your source AAC has DRM (purchased Apple Music subscription tracks). No tool can convert it. Only Apple's apps can play it back.
  • Your destination supports AAC. Modern phones, browsers, podcast platforms, and streaming services all handle AAC. Don't convert by default.

How file sizes compare

AAC is more efficient than MP3, so to preserve quality you typically need a slightly higher MP3 bitrate. Sizes converge at high bitrates and diverge at low ones.

DurationAACMP3Note
1 minute~0.96 MB (128 kbps AAC)~1.4 MB at 192 kbps MP3Higher MP3 bitrate to match AAC quality
1 minute~1.5 MB (192 kbps AAC)~2.4 MB at 320 kbps MP3For quality preservation
1 minute~1.9 MB (256 kbps AAC, iTunes Plus)~2.4 MB at 320 kbps MP3Approximate quality match
1 hour~115 MB (256 kbps AAC)~144 MB at 320 kbps MP325% larger for similar listening quality

Source: typical stereo AAC at the listed bitrate (in M4A or .aac container). Output: stereo MP3 at the matching listenable bitrate.

Where MP3 plays vs AAC

Works with

  • Every device made in the last 25 years
  • Every car head unit, including USB-only ones
  • Every Bluetooth speaker, headphone, smart speaker
  • All web browsers, social media uploads, email, chat platforms
  • Older portable players, hardware samplers, embedded systems that don't support AAC

Does not work with

  • AAC is the technical winner — same bitrate, better sound. MP3 is the compatibility safety net.

How to convert AAC to MP3

Convert with WaveSieve (browser, free, no upload)

Quickest path. Conversion runs in your browser via FFmpeg.wasm — your file never leaves your device, no account needed.

  1. Drop your AAC file onto the upload area at the top of this page. Up to 100 MB per file. Files with .aac, .m4a, .mp4 extensions all work as long as the codec inside is AAC.
  2. In the converter, change the output format to MP3.
  3. Click "Convert to MP3" — encoding takes 5-30 seconds.
  4. Click "Download" to save the MP3.
Pro tip: Going from one lossy format to another stacks artifacts. To minimize damage, pick an MP3 bitrate at least 30-40% higher than the source AAC. 256 kbps AAC → 320 kbps MP3 is a safe match.

Convert with macOS Music app (no extra install)

On a Mac, the Music app converts AAC tracks to MP3 in a few clicks.

  1. Open Music app. Music → Settings → Files → Import Settings → set 'Import Using' to 'MP3 Encoder', and pick a quality (Higher Quality = 192 kbps; Custom for 320).
  2. Drag your AAC/M4A file into the library, or File → Import.
  3. Right-click the imported track → 'Convert' → 'Create MP3 Version'.
  4. The MP3 appears in your library. Right-click → 'Show in Finder' to grab the file.
Pro tip: Switch the import setting back to AAC after this conversion, or all your future imports will be MP3 by default — usually not what you want for a personal library.

Convert with FFmpeg (command line, batch)

For batch jobs across many AAC/M4A files. FFmpeg uses LAME for MP3 encoding.

  1. Install FFmpeg: brew install ffmpeg (macOS), winget install ffmpeg (Windows), or sudo apt install ffmpeg (Linux).
  2. Open a terminal in the folder with your AAC files.
  3. Single file at V0 VBR: ffmpeg -i input.m4a -c:a libmp3lame -q:a 0 output.mp3
  4. Single file at 320 kbps CBR: ffmpeg -i input.m4a -c:a libmp3lame -b:a 320k output.mp3
  5. Whole folder: for f in *.m4a; do ffmpeg -i "$f" -c:a libmp3lame -q:a 0 -map_metadata 0 "${f%.m4a}.mp3"; done
Pro tip: -map_metadata 0 carries over AAC metadata (artist, album, year, track) into the MP3 ID3 tags. Without it, your MP3 library will be missing tags. Album art usually transfers as well.

Things that surprise people

AAC to MP3 is a one-way quality cost — never an upgrade

Some users assume MP3 is more 'standard' and therefore better. The opposite is true for audio quality: AAC is the modern successor to MP3 with better psychoacoustic models. At the same bitrate, AAC is audibly cleaner. Converting AAC → MP3 stacks two lossy generations and degrades quality slightly. Convert only when compatibility forces you to.

DRM-protected AAC files cannot be converted

If your AAC came from Apple Music subscription (or iTunes purchases pre-2009), it has FairPlay DRM. No conversion tool can open it — neither WaveSieve, FFmpeg, nor anything else. Only Apple's own apps can play it. To get an MP3 of the song, you need a different source: a CD rip, an iTunes Store purchase (DRM-free since 2009), or a separate music download.

Don't convert at a lower bitrate than the source

If your source is 256 kbps AAC and you encode to 128 kbps MP3, you're stacking two big quality cuts. The result will be noticeably worse than either format would produce from a clean source. Always encode MP3 at a higher bitrate than your source AAC's apparent quality level.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between .aac, .m4a, and .mp4 files?

All three usually contain AAC audio. .aac is the raw stream (no container). .m4a is AAC inside the MP4 container, intended for audio-only files. .mp4 is the same container but typically holds video plus audio. From a conversion perspective, they all decode the same way — FFmpeg, Audacity, and macOS Music app handle all three.

What MP3 bitrate should I use to preserve AAC quality?

A rough rule: bump up by ~30-40%. 128 kbps AAC → 192 kbps MP3 (close but slightly worse). 192 kbps AAC → 256 kbps MP3. 256 kbps AAC → 320 kbps MP3. The 'iTunes Plus' standard (256 kbps AAC VBR) maps cleanly to 320 kbps MP3 V0 for a sonically equivalent result.

Will the album art and metadata survive?

With FFmpeg's -map_metadata 0, yes. macOS Music app preserves metadata automatically. WaveSieve currently doesn't write metadata into the output. Album art (embedded image) usually transfers from M4A's atom-style metadata into MP3's ID3 v2 tag, but check your output to be sure.

What about converting M4B audiobooks to MP3?

M4B is AAC plus chapter markers. FFmpeg can convert the audio: ffmpeg -i input.m4b -c:a libmp3lame -q:a 0 output.mp3. The chapter markers are dropped (MP3 has no standard chapter format). For an audiobook playback experience, keep the M4B and use Apple's Books app or VLC; convert to MP3 only if you must.
