Convert OGG to MP3 — for game audio, Discord recordings, and Wikipedia samples

OGG (specifically Ogg Vorbis) is the format you'll find in game audio files, Discord voice recordings exported for sharing, Wikipedia audio samples, and a lot of open-source software. It sounds great, but it has limited support outside of the open-source ecosystem — most consumer car stereos, older phones, and some video editors don't read it. Converting to MP3 fixes that compatibility issue. Here's when it makes sense, when it doesn't, and how to do it without making things worse.

When converting OGG to MP3 is the right call

  • You're sharing a Discord voice recording or game soundtrack with someone whose phone or app doesn't decode OGG. iPhones (without third-party players) don't support OGG natively.
  • You're putting a track on a USB drive for a car head unit. Most car stereos don't list OGG; MP3 is universal.
  • You exported audio from a game (Unity / Godot games default to OGG Vorbis) and need to share it on a platform that doesn't accept OGG.
  • You're using a video editor or DAW that mishandles OGG. Most modern tools support it, but Premiere historically required workarounds.
  • You're embedding audio in a website or app and want maximum cross-browser compatibility (MP3 is the universal floor; OGG works on Firefox/Chrome but not Safari natively for some uses).

When you should NOT convert OGG to MP3

  • You think it'll improve quality. Wrong direction. Vorbis (inside OGG) is technically more efficient than MP3 at the same bitrate. Converting OGG → MP3 is a quality downgrade in exchange for compatibility.
  • Your destination supports OGG. Modern Android phones, VLC, foobar2000, and most desktop players handle OGG fine. Don't convert by default.
  • You're going to keep editing the audio. Each lossy encode adds artifacts. Edit the OGG directly in a tool that supports it (Audacity, Reaper, FFmpeg).
  • You're working with a developer who uses the file in a game. Game engines (Unity, Godot, Unreal) all support OGG natively — usually preferred over MP3 because of patent considerations.

How file sizes compare

OGG Vorbis and MP3 have similar size profiles at the same perceived quality, but Vorbis is about 10-20% more efficient. To preserve quality, your MP3 should be at a slightly higher bitrate than the source OGG.

DurationOGGMP3Note
1 minute~0.96 MB (128 kbps OGG, q5)~1.4 MB at 192 kbps MP3MP3 needs higher bitrate for same quality
1 minute~1.4 MB (192 kbps OGG, q6)~2.4 MB at 320 kbps MP3For quality preservation
5 minute game soundtrack~5 MB (128 kbps OGG)~7 MB at 192 kbps MP3Slight size increase, slightly worse quality
30 minute Discord call~14 MB (64 kbps OGG mono)~28 MB at 128 kbps MP3 mono2× larger but plays everywhere

Source: stereo OGG Vorbis at the listed bitrate. Output: stereo MP3 at the matching listenable bitrate.

Where MP3 plays vs OGG

Works with

  • Every device made in the last 25 years
  • Every car head unit, including USB-only ones
  • iPhone and iOS apps (without third-party tools — iOS doesn't play OGG natively)
  • Every Bluetooth speaker, headphone, smart speaker
  • Email, chat, social media, web embeds, podcast platforms
  • Older Android phones, Windows Media Player without codec packs

Does not work with

  • OGG Vorbis is technically a strong codec — open-source, royalty-free, slightly more efficient than MP3. But MP3 wins on universal device support.

How to convert OGG to MP3

Convert with WaveSieve (browser, free, no upload)

Quickest path. Conversion runs in your browser via FFmpeg.wasm — your file never leaves your device, no account needed.

  1. Drop your OGG file onto the upload area at the top of this page. Up to 100 MB per file.
  2. In the converter, change the output format to MP3.
  3. Click "Convert to MP3" — encoding takes 5-30 seconds.
  4. Click "Download" to save the MP3.
Pro tip: Going from one lossy format to another stacks artifacts slightly. To minimize damage, pick an MP3 bitrate at least 30-40% higher than the source OGG's bitrate.

Convert with Audacity (desktop, free, easy GUI)

Audacity opens OGG natively (no plugin needed for input) and exports MP3 via LAME.

  1. Open Audacity. If MP3 export prompts you for the LAME library, install it (audacityteam.org has the link, free).
  2. File → Open → pick your OGG.
  3. File → Export Audio → choose 'MP3 Files' from the format dropdown.
  4. Pick a bitrate: 192 kbps (good balance) or 320 kbps (best). Set 'Bit Rate Mode' to Variable for ~10% smaller files at the same perceived quality.
  5. Click Save, fill in or skip metadata, done.
Pro tip: Audacity's LAME encoder is the gold standard for MP3 quality. The result is sonically as good as MP3 gets — limited only by MP3's algorithm, not Audacity's implementation.

Convert with FFmpeg (command line, batch)

For batch jobs across many OGG files (game soundtracks, exported Discord recordings, etc.).

  1. Install FFmpeg: brew install ffmpeg (macOS), winget install ffmpeg (Windows), or sudo apt install ffmpeg (Linux).
  2. Open a terminal in the folder with your OGG files.
  3. Single file at V0 VBR (recommended): ffmpeg -i input.ogg -c:a libmp3lame -q:a 0 output.mp3
  4. Single file at 320 kbps CBR: ffmpeg -i input.ogg -c:a libmp3lame -b:a 320k output.mp3
  5. Whole folder: for f in *.ogg; do ffmpeg -i "$f" -c:a libmp3lame -q:a 0 -map_metadata 0 "${f%.ogg}.mp3"; done
Pro tip: -map_metadata 0 carries OGG Vorbis comments (artist, album, etc.) into MP3 ID3 tags. Without it, your MP3 library will be missing tags. The mapping is automatic for common fields.

Things that surprise people

OGG → MP3 is a one-way quality cost

Don't expect any quality improvement from converting OGG to MP3. Vorbis (the codec inside OGG) is more efficient than MP3 at the same bitrate, so the conversion is purely a compatibility move. To preserve quality, encode the MP3 at a slightly higher bitrate than the source OGG.

.ogg might contain Vorbis or Opus or FLAC

.ogg is a container, not a codec. It usually holds Vorbis, but newer tools sometimes put Opus or even lossless FLAC inside an .ogg file. If conversion behaves strangely, check what codec is actually inside: 'ffprobe input.ogg' will tell you. Vorbis is the default; the others use the same container but different audio.

Game audio at 96 kbps OGG is fine; converting to 96 kbps MP3 is not

Game soundtracks are often encoded at 96-128 kbps OGG to save space — Vorbis sounds clean at those bitrates. Converting to 96-128 kbps MP3 will sound noticeably worse because MP3 struggles below 128 kbps. Bump up to at least 192 kbps MP3 to preserve listening quality from a 96-128 kbps OGG.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do games and Wikipedia use OGG instead of MP3?

Two reasons. (1) Until 2017, MP3 was patent-encumbered, which made it expensive to use in commercial games and tricky for open-source projects. OGG Vorbis is royalty-free. (2) Vorbis is technically more efficient than MP3 at the same bitrate. Game engines (Unity, Godot, Unreal) all default to OGG for these reasons.

Will the metadata (game info, Discord username) survive?

OGG Vorbis comments map cleanly to MP3 ID3 tags via FFmpeg's -map_metadata 0. Discord recordings often don't have rich metadata to begin with, but any title/artist info will carry over. WaveSieve currently doesn't write metadata — use FFmpeg or Audacity if metadata matters.

Can I edit OGG files directly without converting to MP3 first?

Yes — Audacity, Reaper, FFmpeg, and most modern editors handle OGG natively. The only reason to convert to MP3 before editing is if you're using a tool that's stuck on MP3 input (rare today). Edit OGG directly when you can; it avoids stacking lossy generations.

What's the difference between OGG and OGA?

OGA is a more recent extension specifically for audio-only OGG files (replacing the ambiguous .ogg which can hold video too). They're functionally the same for audio purposes — same container, same codecs. Most tools treat .ogg and .oga interchangeably.
